Millions of people around the globe are invited, for the first time in history, to take a virtual dive on the Great Barrier Reef from wherever they are on the planet and experience the groundbreaking scientific expedition of the Catlin Seaview Survey. The survey aims to carry out the first comprehensive study to document the composition and health of coral reefs on the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea across an unprecedented depth range (0-100m).


Heron Island was chosen to be the preferred location partner of the survey due to its prime location on the Great Barrier Reef, as well as thanks to its first class diving and snorkelling conditions. The island is actually a coral cay situated right on the reef, so many of the dive and snorkel sites are a short 5-10 minute boat ride from the resort, which allows up to 3 dives per day.

Utilising the Google platforms of Street View and Panoramio, the Catlin Seaview Survey – which comprises a series of scientific expeditions to explore and survey the world's coral reefs, will give audiences underwater adventures, and the ability to see exactly what the scientists see on the reef.
