The reef DIVING AND SNORKELlING
Heron Island is known the world over for its Great Barrier Reef scuba diving and snorkelling. The island’s proximity to the reef allows you to enjoy as many as three different full dives a day.
There are more than 20 different dive sites to explore, more than half of which are just fifteen minutes from the beach. Acres of living, unspoiled coral are literally teeming with fish, it's easy to see why serious divers keep coming back to Heron Island time and time again.
One of the dive sites ‘The Heron Bommie’ has been described by Jacques Cousteau as being one of his top ten favourite dive sites.
Subject to weather conditions, three boat trips depart daily at 9am, 11am & 3pm. The 9am trip is for divers only, the other trips for the day take both divers and snorkellers. However, during the summer months 5 boats run daily - 3 dive trips for divers and 2 trips exclusively for snorkellers.
As mentioned, on Heron Island you can dive as many as three times a day. The deepest dive (18m) is first up for the morning and is followed by a 16m and a 14m dive. Every dive is accompanied by a qualified dive guide and is watched over by a lookout and skipper fully certified in dive first aid. All dives are chosen for the prevailing conditions and visibility. Aside from our night dives, our dives are easily within the ability and comfort zone of even the most novice diver.
