The Great Barrier Reef Swim is held annually in conjunction with at Heron Island.

Whether you are an accomplished swimmer or complete novice, all swimming levels are catered for with an emphasis on having fun and simply enjoying the stunning marine life in crystal clear waters. Stunning coral gardens and sea creatures great and small flourish in abundance and colour, making Heron Island an ideal place for swimmers.

Accompanied by well-known, highly respected coaches as well as a vast array of marine life, there is no better place to swim around an island right on the Great Barrier Reef than at Heron Island.

2015 Great Barrier Reef Swim - Heron Island

  • Thursday 29 October - Monday 2 November 2015
  • The 1km swim event will take place on Saturday 31 October 2015
  • The 3km swim event will take place on Sunday 1 November 2015

Guests must be 15 years or older to participate in the 1km & 3km swim events. Guests aged 15 – 18 years of age can participate with guardian’s consent. They will be required to complete a swim clinic with swim coach, Graeme Brewer, for him to assess capability. He will have final word on whether they can enter the race.

Getting to Heron Island

Heron Island 72km is off the coast of Gladstone, on the Great Barrier Reef.

Qantas and Virgin fly to Gladstone daily. From Gladstone, you can transfer to Heron Island by boat.

The Heron Islander leaves Gladstone daily at 11:00am (except Tuesdays & Thursdays), however, the launch will operate on Thursday 29 October. We recommend a flight arrival into Gladstone no later than 10:10am. Please note the launch must depart on schedule at 11:00am.

The boat service on 2nd November 2015 will depart the Heron Jetty at 8:00am and will connect with flights departing from Gladstone from 12:35pm onwards.

If you wish to extend your stay, the boat service will depart Heron Island Jetty at 1:00pm, 5 days a week (all days except Tuesdays & Thursdays), arriving into Gladstone at approximately 3:45pm EST. The launch service from Heron Island connects with flights departing from Gladstone from 5:00pm onwards.

A courtesy transfer is available for immediate transfer to Gladstone Airport.

While we do meet these flights, this is weather and tides permitting.
