Q. Do rooms have cooking facilities?
A: Many rooms are equipped with a fully stocked minibar and coffee and tea-making facilities, but they do not have cooking facilities.
Q. Is there a supermarket or shop on Heron Island?
Heron Island's boutique sells a range of souvenirs and stocks basic necessities such as sunscreen and a selection of medications similar to what is usually available at supermarkets. It sells some snacks and drinks and ice creams for hot days, however, it does not sell other supermarket supplies and there are no other shops on the island.
Q. May I bring my own alcohol?
A. Due to licensing regulations you cannot bring your own alcohol to Heron Island. However, many rooms have fully stocked minibars and Baillie's Bar is a convivial place to enjoy a drink, especially during its daily pre-dinner cocktail hour. There's also an extensive wine list and range of beers available at Shearwater Restaurant.
Q. Is there a dress code?
A. Pack casual clothing for your time on Heron Island. Due to health and safety regulations, shirts and footwear must be worn in the restaurant and bar.
Q. What time do I need to arrive to catch the seaplane?
A. Arrive at the airport at least 30 minutes prior to departure to allow for check-in procedures.
Q. What is the wheelchair accessibility like around the island?
The rooms and main amenities such as the restaurant and bar/pool area are accessible by wheelchair. A buggy can be arranged to transport guests to and from the jetty for the launch transfer.
Q. What are my options for after-hours communication with the mainland?
A. Phone cards are available from reception and there is a public phone near reception. The after-hours telephone number (07) 4972 9055 will reach the island and reception will advise you.
Q. What time do I need to arrive at Gladstone Marina to catch the launch?
A. A courtesy bus departs from Gladstone Airport to reach the marina by 10.30am. Check in for the launch by 10.30am.
Q. Are there televisions in the rooms?
A. Heron Island offers guests a rare chance to have 'screen-free' time. There are no televisions in the resort's rooms. However, Baillie's Bar has three televisions on which you can watch sporting events and general programming.
Q. Which rooms have air-conditioning?
A. The Wistari, Point Suites and Beach House have air-conditioning. All rooms have overhead fans.
Q. When do the turtles come onto Heron Island to lay and hatch?
A. Turtles come to Heron Island to lay their eggs from November to March. Turtle hatchlings can be seen making their way to the water from January to early June.
Q. Can I snorkel right off Heron Island?
A. Some of the best snorkelling is directly off Heron Island. You don't need to catch a boat to reach it. Always check with the experts at the Marine Centre for the best places to snorkel around the island. Good recommendations include from the Gantry to the Harbour, as well as Shark Bay.
Q. Can I hire snorkel gear?
A. You can hire snorkel fins, a shorty wet suit and mask/snorkel from the Marine Centre on the island.

Q. What are the most popular dive sites?
A. The Heron Bommie, Blue Pool, Coral Gardens and Wistari Reef are the most popular but there are many more dive sites nearby to explore.
Q. Can divers and snorkelers go out on the same boat?
A. Yes, divers and snorkelers can all go out to the dive sites and explore together.
Q. Do I need to take my own beach towel/sunscreen/insect repellent?
A. Beach and swimming pool towels are located in the guest rooms. It's advisable to bring your own sunscreen and insect repellent, though it can be purchased at the Heron Island Boutique, if necessary.
Q. Are there stingers?
A. Stingers are generally not an issue in the waters around Heron Island.
Q. What water temperature can I expect?
A. The water temperature ranges from 18 degrees Celsius in winter (July/August) to 29 degrees Celsius in summer.
Q. Can I use my mobile phone on Heron Island?
A. There is no mobile phone coverage on the island. However, there are two card-only payphones and Baillie's Bar sells phone cards.
Q. Is there Internet access on Heron Island?
A. Baillie's Bar has Wi-Fi access in the bar area. Password codes can be purchased from the bar at $5 for 1 hour.
Q. Can we park our car at Gladstone Marina?
A. Gladstone Marina offers secure car lock-up facilities including covered and uncovered parking.
Q. What is the luggage limit for the seaplane transfers?
A. Each passenger can take 15 kilos of luggage onto the seaplane. Scuba divers do not need to bring their own weights. The Marine Centre supplies them for free.
Q. What happens if I have excess luggage for the seaplane transfer?
A. Your excess luggage will be transported to Gladstone Marina and be delivered to the island by launch the next day. When returning to the mainland you can send your excess luggage a day earlier.
Q. What is the brand of Heron Island's amenities?
A. The products in your bathroom are made by Serendipity.
Q. Can I book a spa treatment when I get there?
A. Due to popularity it's best to book a treatment beforehand.
Q. Which rooms have dividers/separators?
A. The Wistari, Beachside and Reef Family rooms have sliding dividers/separators for privacy.
Q. When is the wet season?
A. Heron Island's wet season runs from January to March. However, Heron Island is open year-round.
Q. Is there a program for school-aged children?
A. During the school holidays children from 7-12 years old can join Heron Island's Junior Rangers Program. It runs a range of activities from 30 minutes to two hours duration (they are not concurrent).
Q. Do I need a credit card at time of booking to guarantee my reservation?
A. Yes, However, no charges are processed at time of booking. There is a 1% surcharge for payments by credit card.
Q. Do we need tickets to board the transfers?
A. Boarding passes for the transfers are issued near the points of embarkment.
Q. Does the resort have wheelchair-friendly accommodation?
A. There is one room that is wheelchair accessible. If you have an electric scooter remember to bring your charger and adaptor if required.
Q. What eating options are there on Heron Island?
A. Shearwater Restaurant is the island's only restaurant.
Q. Are vegetarian/gluten-free/vegan diets catered for?
A. There are usually gluten free and vegetarian options on the menu. It is still advisable to let the island know of any dietary requirements well in advance so the chefs can better tailor the menu for you.
Q. Can we complete a PADI course on the island?
A. Yes, however, those wishing to do so must bring a completed Australian standard medical with them.
Q. Is there a nurse on the Island?
A. There are two nurses on the island. The nurses' station is located beside the Marine Centre. Check with reception for hours. They are trained to deal with peanut allergies. Coral cuts can be treated at the 24-hour accessible Betadine station at the Information Centre. For medical emergencies where a guest needs to go back to the mainland, the nurse will organise a transfer with RSCQ helicopters.
Q. Is there a babysitter on the Island?
A. Yes, there is a babysitter service available. Availability is limited and cannot be guaranteed. Please contact the resort prior to arrival.
Q. What are the restrictions with diving and flying?
A. Airlines, including Qantas and Virgin Australia, do not allow passengers to board if they have scuba dived in the 24-hours prior to check-in.
Q. Are there any other dive restrictions?
A. Certified divers with a medical condition must have an Australian-standard medical prior to arriving. Contact the Marine Centre in advance for more information.
Q. Are the Mutton Birds noisy?
A. Mutton Birds are particularly noisy during their breeding and mating season. The mating season is usually during the months of November and December whilst January is usually the time the Mutton Birds are breeding.
Q. Will my stay be affected by Jelly Fish?
A. Heron Island is located approximately 72km off the coast of Gladstone and is therefore not usually affected by the Stinger season. It is very unlikely to observe Stinger Jelly Fish from Heron Island.
